I am installing Sitefinity_3_1_SP2_Standard on my desktop, for evaluation.  I am running XP SP2 with IIS 5.1.

During installation, I get the error message "Error creating virtual directory telerik".  I continue and the same error occurs for Sitefinity3.1, JobsIntraSite, and TIUSite.

I am logged in as a local admin, and the Default Web Site is running.

    Thank in advance,

    Dean Bosse

    Hello Dean Bosse,

Most probably you are upgrading Sitefinity by running the installation wizard without first removing the old Sitefinity version. We would recommend installing Sitefinity again.
To make a clean installation of Sitefinity,
    • uninstall the previous edition
    • ensure that all files and folders except the WebSites folder are deleted from the installation directory \Program Files\telerik\Sitefinity3.x.
Run the Sitefinity CMS distribution file. The wizard will install the application in \Program Files\telerik\Sitefinity3.x by default.

    Best wishes,

Thank you Rebecca, but that did not help.

Originally, I did not have any Telerik applications loaded on my computer, so it was a clean install from the beginning.

I have tried uninstalling, deleting files and folders to no avail.  I get the same errors when I run the install.

    What else can I do?

    Thanks again.

Thanks.  I had seen this in the troubleshooting guide.  I believe my problem is different since the install process isn't creating ANY of the virtual folders in IIS including the Sitefinity 3.1 folder.  So, I cannot even execute the first set of instructions, since the folder doesn't exist in IIS.

Even though I am running XP Pro, I have an another web site running in IIS (5.1).  I created this site by stopping the Default Web Site.  I continue to move back and forth by stopping one and starting the other.  I've worked like this for years.  Could the existance of this (stopped) web site be causing trouble for your installation program?

    Thanks again.

    Hello Dean Bosse,

You are right in your assumption. The Sitefinity installer tries to create its virtual folders in the default IIS site. If the Default Web Site site is stopped or does not exist, the installation will fail in creating the virtual directories.
For details, please refer to the User Manual > Installing Sitefinity on a Local Development Machine.

    hello

i have the similiar problem with Error creating virtual directory telerik/Sitefinity3.7 Community. The system cannot find the path specified. (like here)
i have a handful of sites in iis, so i tried to add one "Default Web Site" for it to use (like what is written in troubleshooting) and left it as the only one started, but it didn't help.

i think i've tried installing this version previously and uninstalled later  - because i don't find any trails of it left.

    Hi, Ivan.

Thank you for your attention. i tried following these directions, but have no success. I also found out that i can copy an empty project separetely into a Website, without running the install, and that i was able to do. However i'm now confused as to what user credentials to use to log into the administration panel.

    Hi 1 1,

You can take a look at this KB article for the issue with not being able to find the path specified: Installing Sitefinity in a location different from Default Web Site . The Sitefinity Project Manager runs with Windows Authentication - you must log in with your Windows credentials. The user you are logging in must have rights to create virtual directories in IIS.

    hello

Yes, i have seen that page but it didn't help me. It assumes that i have file "/telerik/Sitefinity3.x/ProjectManager/Web.Config" - which i don't. There is a folder "\telerik\Sitefinity3.7 Community\ProjectManager\" created and filled during installation, but once it encounters the "could not create virtual directory" error it rolls everything back and these files go away. I don't seem to have any "Sitefinity Project Manager" tools.

I might have confused what credentials i'm talking about in my previous message. I have downloaded the "BlankProject" files and set them up on a new website. i have the "under construction" on http://localhost and the sitefinity login panel on http://localhost/sitefinity . This last panel is the one that is confusing me with how do i get into it.

    Hello D.B.G. (1 1),

When you create a project with the Blank project archive you will be first asked to connect to a database. You can connect to an empty one and then you will be prompted to create an administrative user. Those couple of articles might be useful:
    Installing Sitefinity using Blank Project
Using Sitefinity Templates with a Blank Project

Thanks Ivan your Sitefinity Installation: Error Creating Virtual Directory link helped me.

As a side note, I also had to switch the app pool to use the Classic .NET AppPool instead of the Default Integrated one on IIS7 to get the site to work.
