    Hi

    Trying to set up a new local project and we're getting a failure at the database setup screen when selecting SQLExpress:

    There was an error trying to connect to the Database Server:

    Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.

    Thanks
    Ben

    Hello Stephen Hudson,

    Thank you for using our services.

    It seems the problem is related to the database server. Check out that your connections string looks like this one below.

     <connectionStrings>
        <add name="Sitefinity" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Sitefinity.mdf" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
      </connectionStrings>

    Try running the project as dbo of the database. You may also find the following resources useful MSDN, Error: Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server...

    I hope this helps.

    All the best,

    Would you please give more detailed instructions on this issue?

    Where do you find a "connections string"?  What change did you make?  Should it look like you have it? or should we make it look like you have it?

    Did this reply make sense to you?  Did it fix your problem?  I have the same issue.  Any suggestions for me?

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

    The provided example represents part of Sitefinity's web.config where SQLExpress is used as a database. Check out www.connectionstrings.com for more information.

    That's still very difficult to understand.  It's a list of connection strings...What is a connection string?  Where does it go?
