Since I'm trying to bend the Download List control to being more like a full-featured document management control, where you can sort on columns, etc. I realized that in the admin portion of Sitefinity looking at a Document Library, you are able to sort on those columns.  I also realized that the reason you can is through the use of the GridView control.

Now my question is: why not use the GridView control to generate the output of the DownloadList control?  Why reinvent the wheel by creating the table columns manually with the template file and then using a repeater to loop through the records.

I would love the ability to sort on columns because there are times where you may want to sort it alphabetically, and other times where you want to see the most recently published documents.  Using the GridView would be a quick way to accomplish this since it has that functionality built in.  If someone could explain this in some more detail, the reason for doing it this way.

    Hi Erik,

Thank you for your feedback, you are absolutely right in your observations.
We decided on the current implementation with a repeater just to give the user the option to choose whether to render tables or not.
However, we already have plans to use the GridView to generate the output of Download List in one of the upcoming releases but we cannot commit to a stricter timeframe yet.
