I really want to start developing with site finity, but I am finding the rad controls and nolics very daunting.

One thing that would really really help me with developing an intra-site module is an example using plain old controls and sqldatareaders.

Both rad controls and ORM are very new to me, so seeing things working with the basics would help extremely!!!

Rad controls look awesome, but learning one thing at a time would make it much easier.

A good simple example say crud for the northwind category table.

    Hi Sam,

you can find a sample of intra-site module that does not use Nolics (it uses SqlDataSource controls) here :

Sitefinity intra-site modules : The Unbearable Lightness of Development

I am not sure, whether there are any RadControls there or not, but you can easily replace them with plain ASP.NET controls. While speaking of RadControls, the point of RadControls is that in fact they provide you with complex functionality in a very simple, straightforward manner... so no need to be afraid of them. They'll become your best friend very soon :).

By the way, the VB.NET version of above mentioned sample you can find here.
