I am not really a developer and so I was hoping that this would just sort of work out the box.

I have created a "document" library and broken it up into categories.  I then uploaded documents into the relevant categories.  I was hoping I would then be able to drop the Download List control on to a page, select the library, and be able to tell it to categorise the documents and display the category name.

Please can you tell me if this is at all possible?

Further to that I was hoping to use the categories to specify a starging node level which would serve as a filter for the list of documents returned, e.g.
    Category 1
      Category 1.1
        Category 1.1.1
    >> Add Download list control that displays all documents under Category 1

Is this at all possible?  If not then it is MOST DEFINITELY one for the suggestion box.

    Hi Charles,

Thank you for contacting Telerik Support.

The functionality you are describing comes out of the box. To achieve it you just have to go through a few steps in the admin side of your website (no hardcoding required). Please, do the following:

    1)  Create your categories, in the documents library and populate them with items for download (I believe you have already done that).
    2) Go to the Pages section and select the page that you want to display the items for download.
    3) Drop a DownloadList control on your page.
    4) Select the Library you want your download list to list items from.
    5) Drop a CategoriesList or CategoriesTree control on your page.
    6) Open the categories control for editing,  under the Behavior section provide the URL for the CategoryContentUrl (for example if the page where you do have your DownloadList and CategoryTree is ~/home.aspx provide that URL).
    7) In Data section give the provider name for your downloads (the name for the library provider is Libraries).
    8) Click I'm done.

That should do it in case you do not want anything extra. Please note that documents that are contained in a subcategory of a category, will be also listed in the parent category.

Please post your inquires at one place only - it is easier for us to track them. Thank you for your understanding.

    All the best,
    the Telerik team

As a follow up.... is it possible to associate categories with specific libraries only? For example:

    Department 1 Library
      Department 1 Category 1 Documents
      Department 1 Category 2 Documents

    Department 2 Library
      Department 2 Category 1 Documents
      Department 2 Category 2 Documents

such that Department 2's Categories only show up under Department 2 and not Department 1 also? So far it appears that the categories are shared among all libraries,.

    Hi Michael Buchsbaum,

Unfortunately under the current architecture it is not possible to associate categories with certain libraries only. Categories created in the Images and Documents module will be available to all libraries in this module.

    Kind regards,
