I am thinking of writing a class that intercepts all page requests and compares them against the <urlrewrites><rule><rewrite> nodes and the redirects the request to the <rule> value...

So that any link or request for a page that has a rewrite rule will direct to the <rule><url>

Is this advisable? Is there maybe some other way of doing this?

    Hello Duncan,

Actually, the Advanced URL Rewriter in Sitefinity does not do any redirect, it just rewrites the URL internally, so in the address bar in the browser you see the initial requested URL. If you want to use exactly redirect method, you should use a third party module (you can find several in the WWW), or build a custom one.

If you elaborate more about your case, probably we could give you more valuable advice.
