    I wrote a quick article about using Sitefinity's "Overlay" page edit mode:

    Here is a quick summary; I was having problems with the "Overlay" page edit mode going completely gray.  This prevented me from altering my pages.  To make changes to my Sitefinity pages I had to switch to the "Classic" edit mode.

    I discovered that the "Overlay" edit mode requires that all <asp:contentplaceholder> tags be completely empty.  Empty not only at a master template level, but also at a Sitefinity template level.

    The article has a few more details.  Hopefully this will help others.

    Wanted to chime in on this item as it still can occur in the latest 3.5 version.

    I noticed that if I am creating a new master.template and even simply drag and drop a new Content placeholder control on the page I can end up with the greyed out zones in overlay mode.

    simple drag and drop result:
    1<div id="menu"
    3<asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="ContentPlaceHolder1" runat="server"

    what i now do to avoid this issue is simply use short notation to close the tag and drop off the separate placeholder closing tag  />  this seems to work flawlessly.

    <div id="menu"
    <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="ContentPlaceHolder1" runat="server" />

    Hello Brook,

    Thank you for sharing this with the community!
    The implementation of the page editor and the overlay mode is not changed much, so everything you have said is true.

    All the best,
